His father, a free *mulâtre*, was named François Renaud; his mother, a free *quarteronne*, Marie-Louise Frère, widow of Noël Beaugé, had married for the second time. Desruisseaux himself married Mademoiselle Marie-Simoine Desmares, daughter of Jean-François Desmares, whose story we saw at the beginning of the 1st volume.
