Académie française awards Eustache the prize for virtue
Haitian
Such is this Eustache, this enslaved man who honored the title of man. The French Academy awarded him the first prize for virtue, of 5,000 francs, in its public session of 9 August 1835. When praise came to seek him out, he rejected it with his customary simplicity, saying to one of the members of the Academy: “It is not for men, my dear Sir, that I do this, it is for the Master who is up there.” Engraving took pleasure in reproducing the figure of this hero of charity. The name of Eustache shines forever in the Annals of virtue.
Rouzier tells this under the entry BELIN.
