A fuel price hike sets Port-au-Prince on fire and topples a government

On Friday 6 July 2018 the government announced that from the next day gasoline would rise 38 percent, diesel 47 percent and kerosene 51 percent, conditions attached to an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. The announcement came in the afternoon, and by evening burning tyres and barricades had closed the roads in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien. Shops were looted, several people were killed, and the country stopped for three days. Within twenty-four hours prime minister Jack Guy Lafontant suspended the increase. He resigned on 14 July, and the anger did not go away with him.
