A fuel price hike sets Port-au-Prince on fire and topples a government

On Friday 6 July 2018 the government announced that from the next day gasoline would rise 38 percent, diesel 47 percent and kerosene 51 percent – conditions attached to an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. The announcement came in the afternoon, and by evening burning tyres and barricades had closed the roads in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien. Shops were looted, several people were killed, and the country stopped for three days. Within twenty-four hours prime minister Jack Guy Lafontant suspended the increase. He resigned on 14 July, and the anger did not go away with him.
