A cacique greets the Spaniards with 2,000 men, cotton and gold

Haitian

… he did not know whether they said it for nobleman or governor or judge. Finally, the Cacique came to them, and the whole town gathered in the square, which was very well swept, for there were more than 2,000 men. This king did much honor to the people of the ships, and the common people each brought them something to eat and to drink. Afterward the king gave each one some cotton cloths that the women wear, and parrots for the Admiral and certain pieces of gold; the common people also gave some of the same cloths, and other things from their houses, to the sailors, for any small thing that they gave them, which, by the way they received it, it seemed they esteemed as relics. Toward evening, when they wished to take leave, the king begged them to wait until the next day; the whole town the same. Seeing that they were set on their return, they came with them much of the way, carrying on their backs what the Cacique and the others had given them, as far as the boats, which remained at the mouth of the river.
