900. 1793-Jul.-Mid: More than fifty French ships fleeing the destruction of Cap Français arrived in Baltimore loaded with thousands of destitute refugees. This massive influx provided a powerful visual testament to the success of the black revolt that newspapers alone could not convey. Among those observing the arrival was Newport Bowers, a free-born black man from Massachusetts working near the Baltimore wharves. Rather than being deterred by the chaos, Bowers decided to travel in the opposite direction and visit the Cap himself. His journey highlights the active interest and agency Afro-North Americans exercised regarding the Haitian Revolution.
