600 A.D. (approx.): The Ostionoid series of cultures began to emerge on the island of Hispaniola. These peoples developed more complex social structures and eventually evolved into the Classic Taino society encountered by Europeans. Significance: Direct precursor to Classic Taíno society. Nuance: Rouse infers increasing village permanence and hierarchical development during this period.
