2005: (The Structural Evolution of a Shared History): In the preface, Michael Heinl explains that the current edition is a necessary update to a work first published nearly twenty-seven years prior. He observes that while time has passed, many of Haiti’s core political challenges—such as Washington-backed leadership and internal opposition—remain strikingly similar. The revisions were intended to address a persistent need for a complete English-language history of the country. This edition also acknowledges the transition of Haiti from an “afterthought” in journalism to a subject that now requires specialized expertise. The author maintains that this work continues the mission of Robert and Nancy Heinl to tell the full story of the Haitian people.
