2000-04-03: (Jean Dominique Assassinated, the Most Prominent Journalist in Haitian History Murdered for Speaking Truth to Power, His Killing Remaining Unsolved and Symbolizing the Cost of Press Freedom in Haiti): On April 3, 2000, Jean Dominique, Haiti’s most prominent journalist and human rights activist, was assassinated by unknown gunmen as he arrived at work. Born on July 30, 1930, Dominique had founded Radio Haïti Internationale in 1968, the first radio station to broadcast in Kreyòl, giving a voice to the Kreyòl-speaking majority that the French-language press had ignored. He had been forced into exile twice during the Duvalier dictatorship and the Cédras military regime. A staunch supporter of Aristide, Dominique’s murder was widely believed to have been politically motivated. The killing was never solved. American film director Jonathan Demme released a documentary of Dominique’s life titled The Agronomist in 2003. Dominique’s death demonstrated that in Haiti, the price of journalism was sometimes the journalist’s life.
