1943: (Sylvain-Bouchereau’s Wartime Report — The First Decade of LFAS Women’s Political Organizing Coming to a Close Alongside the Final Two Years of World War II, In Her Final Essays of 1943 Madeleine Sylvain-Bouchereau Orienting Her Thoughts in the Tone of a Wartime Report: “At the Dawn of 1944 We All Come Together Under This Flag of the Fight Against Evil Against Ignorance Against Illness Against Misery and Against Injustice and Thanks to the Persevering Collaboration of All of Those Who Dedicate Themselves We Will Restore Society to Better Foundations”): The first decade of LFAS women’s political organizing came to a close alongside the final two years of World War II. In her final essays of 1943, Madeleine Sylvain-Bouchereau oriented her thoughts about the history, promise, and shortcomings of women’s activism in the tone of a wartime report. At the dawn of 1944, she wrote, they all came together under the flag of the fight against evil, against ignorance, against illness, against misery, and against injustice, and thanks to the persevering collaboration of all of those who dedicated themselves, they would restore society to better foundations — the language was deliberately martial, placing the women’s struggle on the same plane as the global war against fascism.
