1943-11-03: (The Target Population and the Inauguration — the Target Population for the Foyer Being Peasant Migrant Women Turned Urban Working Poor, the Women of Greatest Concern to the Government Because of Their Unregulated Movements but the Least Considered in Social Services and Educational Programming — After Its Inauguration on November 3 1943 the Foyer’s Pool of Interested Students Topping 400 with 100 Students Coming Each Day for Lessons “on Anything People Ask For” Including Sewing Cutting Cooking Typing and French Spanish and English Language Courses): The target population for the Foyer was peasant migrant women turned urban working poor. They were the women of greatest concern to the government because of their unregulated movements, but the least considered in social services and educational programming. After its inauguration on November 3, 1943, the Foyer’s pool of interested students topped four hundred, with one hundred students coming to the Foyer each day for lessons on anything people asked for, including sewing, cutting, cooking, and typing classes, as well as French, Spanish, and English language courses — the demand overwhelmed the supply by a factor of thirteen, the thirty-person room receiving a hundred women a day.
