1940-10: (The LFAS Withdraws Its Forces — In the October-November Issue of La Voix des Femmes in 1940 Madeleine Announcing That the LFAS Would “Withdraw Their Forces,” Emphasizing That the Leaders Had Not “Let Themselves Be Dazzled or Dismantled” by the Work of the First Five Years but That in Order to Truly Develop “a Vast Action Including a Considerable Number of Women of All Classes and All Trades Working Under the Leadership of Autonomous Committees” the Women Needed to Reassess Their Approach): In the contexts of the massacre of Haitians, grave economic inequality, and women’s marginal political position in national governance, LFAS members assessed the first five years of organizing and expressed frustration with the outcomes of their work. In the October–November issue of La Voix des Femmes in 1940, Madeleine announced that the LFAS would withdraw their forces. She emphasized that the leaders had not let themselves be dazzled or dismantled by the work they had done in the first five years of organizing, but that in order to truly develop a vast action including a considerable number of women of all classes and all trades working under the leadership of autonomous committees, the women needed to reassess their approach — the withdrawal was not defeat but strategic retreat, a recognition that the first decade’s methods had reached their limit.
