1937: (Working-Class Women’s Refusal — Locating Women at the Intersections of Labor Capitalism and Migration Valcin Also Capturing Working-Class Women’s Refusal, a Woman’s Decision to Flee Uneven Economic Contexts Despite Deep Familiarity with Her Woman Employer Also Documenting Varying Desires Meanings of Freedom and the Limitations of a Political Practice That Presumed Haitian Women Shared the Same Concerns — the Domestic Worker’s Disappearance Being a Reminder That LFAS Women Could Organize Publicly and Privately but Were Not in Charge of the Terms of Women’s Engagement): Locating women at the intersections of labor, capitalism, and migration, Valcin also captured working-class women’s refusal. A woman’s decision to flee uneven economic contexts, despite deep familiarity with her woman employer or family, documented varying desires, meanings of freedom, and the limitations of a political practice that presumed Haitian women shared the same concerns. The domestic worker’s disappearance was a reminder that LFAS women could organize publicly and privately but that they were not in charge of the terms of women’s engagement — the servant who walked away was exercising a sovereignty that no LFAS resolution could grant or revoke.
