1937: (Alice Garoute’s “Moral Misery”: In One Essay in 1937 Alice Garoute Writing “Our Moral Misery Is as Painful as the Greatest Material Suffering and We Turn Our Gaze to the One Who Can by a Gesture or a Word Raise Us to the Rank of Free Citizens of Our Country,” the Statement Meant to Appeal to Male Senators Voting on a Constitutional Amendment to Liberate Women’s Wages, the Framing Universalizing the Material Conditions of Haitian Women): In one essay in 1937, Alice Garoute wrote that their moral misery was as painful as the greatest material suffering, and they turned their gaze to the one who could, by a gesture or a word, raise them to the rank of free citizens of their country. While the statement was meant to appeal to male senators who were voting on a constitutional amendment to liberate women’s wages, the framing universalized the material conditions of Haitian women. The appeal was directed upward, to the male legislators who held the power to grant what the women sought. The LFAS claimed to represent the conditions of the majority of women.
