1889-September-01: While stationed at Cap Haitien, Admiral Gherardi established a relationship with Anténor Firmin, Hyppolite’s “counselor in charge of foreign relations.” Firmin, the son-in-law of former President Salnave, was destined to become the Minister of Foreign Relations. According to Firmin, Gherardi and Commander Sumner visited him shortly after Harrison took office, marking the beginning of a high-level coordination between the U.S. Navy and the Haitian revolutionary leaders that would later define the negotiations for Môle Saint-Nicolas.
