1889-October-09: Following the collapse of the Légitime government, Frederick Douglass, the newly appointed American Minister to Haiti, arrived in Port-au-Prince. Douglass, a world-renowned abolitionist, was initially greeted with immense enthusiasm by the Haitian public. However, his mission was immediately complicated by the presence of Admiral Gherardi, who remained in Haitian waters to press for the “repayment” of the debt he believed Hyppolite owed the U.S. Navy for its assistance during the revolution.
