1887-March-14: The Haitian government, fearing an imminent British seizure of the Island of La Tortue (Tortuga), ordered a battalion of the Ninth Regiment of infantry to the island. The commanding officer at Port-de-Paix was given strict instructions to “fire upon any English troop” that attempted to take possession. This military mobilization demonstrated Haiti’s determination that territorial resistance should be “pushed to the last limit,” even in the face of superior British naval power.
