1860: Geffrard reached an agreement with the Vatican to sign a Concordat that formalized the status of the Catholic Church. The president intended to use the church to remove what he called the “last vestiges of barbarism and slavery.” This agreement was strongly supported by the mulatto elite who sought to strengthen cultural ties with Europe.
