1850: Insurrection aboard the S Cruz, bound for São Sebastião (voyage 4035)

On a slaving voyage that ended at São Sebastião in 1850, the people aboard the S Cruz rose against the crew. They had been taken at a port the record does not name.

The record gives the numbers as: 751 people were embarked; 680 were landed.

Captain: Soares, Antonio Germano. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “vice-Admiralty Court, St.Helena, condemned.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
