1843: Insurrection aboard the Progresso, bound for Cape of Good Hope (voyage 3192)

On a slaving voyage that ended at Cape of Good Hope in 1843, the people aboard the Progresso rose against the crew. They had been taken at Quilimane.

The record gives the numbers as: 447 people were embarked; 270 were landed; 177 died on the crossing.

Captain: Chaves, Antônio Rodrigues. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “vice-Admiralty Court, Cape of Good Hope, condemned.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
