1840-1867: During the final decades of the trade, the regional origins of liberated Africans became more representative of the overall traffic as suppression efforts were applied across the entire Atlantic basin. West Central Africa emerged as the leading region of departure for these individuals, accounting for 63.7 percent of the captives liberated during this period. These individuals primarily exited the continent through ports in the Congo River area, such as Ambriz, Luanda, and Cabinda. This demographic shift reflected the intense focus of the illegal trade on the South Atlantic markets and the subsequent relocation of naval patrols to those coastal sectors.
