1830-March-01: The United States officially requested that Great Britain be apprised of the “danger” posed by the alleged Mexican-Haitian plot against Cuba. This request again demonstrated the U.S. strategy of leaving the defense of its regional interests in Haiti to the British navy and diplomacy. While the available documents do not reveal the ultimate outcome of the Basadre incident, they confirm that the U.S. remained willing to outsource its Haitian policy to London to avoid the domestic political fallout of direct engagement. By the end of the 1820s, Haiti had become a “threat” that the U.S. preferred to manage through third parties rather than address through recognition.
