1829: The Reverend Robert Walsh provided a graphic eyewitness account of boarding the Brazilian slaving schooner Veloz (or Feloz) while it was bound for Bahia with over 500 captives. He described the ship as being equipped with a formidable swivel gun and massive cooking kettles, typical of vessels designed for both trafficking and potential piracy. The captives were stowed so tightly under grated hatchways that they were forced to sit between each other’s legs with no possibility of changing position. Walsh noted that during the first seventeen days of the voyage, fifty-five individuals had already been thrown overboard after perishing in these suffocating conditions.
