1816 (Transition to Independence): The Haytian Papers document the shift from French colonial decrees to the “Narrative of the Accession of their Royal Majesties to the Throne of Hayti”. This narrative marks the moment when the people moved away from the “Registers of the Deliberations of the Consuls of the Republic” toward a sovereign identity. Prince Sanders used these historical archives to showcase the “Rise, Progress, and Present State” of the kingdom. He emphasized that the transition was characterized by a “pacific spirit” and “domestic views” focused on national stability. By contrasting French law with Haytian proclamations, the volume highlights the triumph of the “African race” over colonial dominance.
