1816 (Sanders’ Editorial Intent): Prince Sanders included these specific military correspondences to showcase the intellectual and moral fortitude of the Haytian founders. He argued that these documents proved the Haytians were not “led astray” by others but were acting on a sophisticated understanding of their own rights. By publishing these historical records in London, Sanders intended to provide a “practical exemplification” of the Haytian character to the British public. He believed that the clear, principled writing of men like Christophe would refute the racist “misrepresentations” of the time. The collection thus functions as both a historical archive of the 1802 conflict and a diplomatic tool for the 1816 Haytian state.
