1816 (Diplomatic Objective): Prince Sanders, acting as an agent for the Haytian Government, published the Haytian Papers in London to provide “more correct information” regarding the kingdom’s “enlightened systems of policy” and “pacific spirit”. He sought to demonstrate the “ameliorated and much improved condition of all classes of society” within the empire to the British public. This effort was specifically intended to counter “misrepresentations and false statements” from opponents of the abolition of the slave trade who claimed Hayti would interfere with the internal regulations of neighboring powers. Sanders aimed to show that the actual character of the Haytians would allay all such apprehensions. He believed it was necessary for these truths to be made apparent to a nation he described as “genuine philanthropists”.
