1812 (Call for National Reconciliation): In a passionate appeal for unity, King Henry Christophe declared that the “black and of the yellow” citizens must recognize their common destiny to survive. He warned that continued domestic quarrels only served to nourish the hopes of “vile agents” of the French government who sought to exploit their divisions. The King pledged that no sacrifice would be “too dear” for him to reunite the children of Hayti under his “paternal shield.” He called upon the population to reject the “new plots” being framed by their common tyrants to make their civil strife last forever. This message was intended to position the King as the only legitimate protector capable of preserving the freedom of all Haytians regardless of color.
