1812-02-24: (Christophe Promulgates the Code Henri, a Comprehensive Legal System Based on the Code Napoléon, an Attempt to Impose European Legal Order on a Black Kingdom in the Caribbean): On February 24, 1812, Christophe promulgated the Code Henri, a comprehensive legal code for northern Haiti modeled on the Code Napoléon. The code represented Christophe’s belief that a functioning legal system was as essential to the legitimacy of his kingdom as the Citadel was to its defense. Despite his efforts to foster education and establish the rule of law, the majority of his subjects experienced the Code Henri as an instrument of authoritarian control rather than a guarantor of rights. The irony was thick: a formerly enslaved man imposing a legal system named after the man who had tried to re-enslave his country.
