1811 (Grand Marshals and Great Officers): The “Great Officers of the Kingdom” were established as Grand Marshals of Hayti, chosen by King Christophe from among the most meritorious generals of all ranks. These positions were granted for life, ensuring a stable and loyal military elite at the head of the nation’s armed forces. Even if an officer became invalided or ceased to be actively employed by the King’s order, he retained his titles, his rank, and half of his pay. This system of rewards was designed to foster “zeal and patriotism” among the high command by providing lifelong security and honor. It further solidified the King’s control over the military by linking the interests of the top generals directly to the crown.
