1810-Jun.-01: William Walton, Jr.

1810-Jun.-01: William Walton, Jr. published The Present State of the Spanish Colonies, providing a rare detailed report on the “Spanish part” of Hispaniola (Santo Domingo) during the revolutionary wars. Walton described the total economic and social disruption caused by the frequent invasions and shifts in territorial control between 1791 and 1809. He noted that the eastern part of the island had become a transit point for people and information moving between Haiti and the Spanish Main. The work offered a unique perspective on how the revolution had effectively unified the island’s political destiny. This source is a critical primary account of the regional spillover effects of the Haitian Revolution.
