1808 (Expulsion of General Ferrand): Through the generous military aid provided by the Haytian President, General Don Juan Sanchez Ramirez was able to attack the French forces under General Ferrand. Ferrand had taken refuge in the city of St. Domingo, the last major point on the island occupied by French troops. The coordinated effort successfully expelled the French from this stronghold, further securing the island from colonial re-occupation. Christophe’s policy toward the “just, loyal, and sensible” Spanish people proved to be a masterstroke of regional diplomacy. This strategic cooperation underscored the President’s vision for a unified island free from European military presence.
