1803-Jan.-01: R.C. Dallas published his History of the Maroons, which provided a detailed account of the 1795 Maroon War in Jamaica and its connection to the broader unrest in the Caribbean. Dallas argued that the “seditious principles” of the French had reached the interior of Jamaica, encouraging the Maroons to take up arms against the colonial government. He emphasized that the mobility of the revolutionary message was the greatest threat to the stability of the plantation system. The work served as a warning to the British elite about the dangers of “black Jacobinism” spreading through maritime and terrestrial networks. This history remains a key text for understanding the regional impact of the Haitian Revolution.
