1802 (The Vanishing of Colonial Prejudices): The King asserts that the Haytian people have emerged from the “clouds of prejudice” in which their enemies sought to enwrap and beguile them. Through the “terrible experience” of the war, they have come to a full knowledge of “truth, of reason, and of our own strength.” The manifesto declares that the nation can no longer be victims of their own “credulity and good faith” because the memory of the “horrible torments” inflicted on their families is permanently etched in their minds. This intellectual and psychological awakening is described as a permanent safeguard against future deception. The text implies that a “civilized and peaceable nation” has been forged in the fires of betrayal and survival.
