1802-Feb.-03: General Leclerc arrives with a massive French expeditionary force. Napoleon sent this fleet with secret orders to restore slavery and capture the revolutionary leadership. Significance: Triggered the final and most violent phase of the Revolution. Nuance: Initial divisions among Black leaders gave France temporary advantage. Resistance radicalized fully only after evidence of slavery’s restoration elsewhere in the Caribbean.
