1802, August 24 – 1803, April 7: (The Imprisonment and Death of Toussaint Louverture): Following his arrest, Toussaint Louverture was transported to the Jura mountains and imprisoned in the stone vault of Fort de Joux on August 24, 1802. Locked away in a cell twenty feet long by twelve wide, Toussaint was separated from his family and his faithful servant, Mars Plaisir. While he languished in the freezing cold of the Jura, his ancient rival André Rigaud was also being held in the same fortress. Napoleon showed interest only in keeping Toussaint confined and discovering the location of his supposed hidden treasure in Saint-Domingue. On April 7, 1803, Toussaint was found dead by his keeper, huddled over the ashes of a cold fireplace; the official cause of death was listed as “apoplexy-pleuro-peripneumonia”.
