1799-May: Interracial crews from Saint-Domingue arrived at the port of Maracaibo in Venezuela under false pretenses to incite a local rebellion against Spanish rule. These sailors sought to spark an uprising by disseminating radical principles and promising support from the revolutionary government in the Caribbean. This attempt to export the “black republic” to the South American mainland terrified Spanish officials, who feared the fragility of their own slave system. The event highlighted the proactive role of seafaring people of color in spreading the revolutionary spirit of the French Caribbean. It confirmed that the borders of the Spanish Empire remained porous to the “common wind” of liberty.
