1798, October 2: (The End of the British Campaign): The Union Jack was lowered for the last time over Haitian soil on October 2, 1798, as Admiral William Bligh embarked the remaining survivors. The disastrous enterprise cost the British Treasury between £5 million and £20 million and resulted in the deaths of over 14,000 soldiers. Toussaint and Maitland concluded a secret agreement where Britain pledged not to attack Saint-Domingue in exchange for Toussaint’s promise not to interfere in Jamaica. Before departing, Maitland hosted Toussaint as an honored guest and suggested he proclaim himself King of Haiti under British protection.
