1798, May–August: (The British Withdrawal and Internal Rivalry): On May 8, 1798, British troops marched out of Port-au-Prince following an evacuation agreement that allowed them to leave peacefully. By August 23, the British also abandoned their positions in Jérémie, leaving the entire South under the control of Rigaud. During this transition, Hédouville attempted to secure French authority by fanning the rivalry between Toussaint and Rigaud, leading to a tense meeting at the Cap in July. The two leaders parted icily, with Rigaud returning to his stronghold in Les Cayes and Toussaint encircling the British at Môle St. Nicolas.
