1798-August-31: Toussaint Louverture and British General Thomas Maitland signed a landmark secret convention following the British decision to withdraw from the island. In this agreement, Toussaint solemnly promised that no colonial troops would attack the British island of Jamaica during the war. Maitland pledged in return that British forces would not attack Saint-Domingue or interfere in its internal political arrangements. The convention also established a system where British authorities would allow food supplies into designated ports in exchange for products. This secret treaty demonstrated Toussaint’s ability to conduct an independent foreign policy while nominally serving as a French general.
