1797-Jun.-24: Prince Hall, the prominent black activist and founder of the African Lodge in Boston, delivered a famous charge that specifically mentioned the occurrences of the Haitian Revolution. Hall used the success of the black revolutionaries in Saint-Domingue to encourage African Americans in their own struggle for equality and the abolition of slavery. Hall was a central figure in the trans-Atlantic black network, maintaining connections with activists in the Caribbean. His speeches explicitly linked the local struggles of Boston’s black community with the global movement for universal freedom. This entry illustrates how the “common wind” of revolution energized black intellectual and political life in the early United States.
