1797, August 20: (The Final Ousting of Sonthonax): On August 20, 1797, Toussaint marched on the Cap with two regiments to force the final departure of Commissioner Sonthonax. Toussaint informed the commissioner that he must return to France to take his elected seat in the Corps Législatif. Frustrated and furious, Sonthonax boarded a ship and left the island for the last time. Ironically, a ship was already en route from France bearing official orders for his recall.
