1795: A massive revolt erupted near the coastal city of Coro in 1795, representing the largest insurrection of its kind in Venezuelan history. The uprising involved a coalition of slaves, free blacks, and people of mixed blood who attempted to establish an independent government. Official inquiries traced the roots of the insurrection to the intense agitation surrounding the suppressed royal decree of 1789. The rebels were motivated by a still-prevalent belief that the king had granted them rights which local authorities were unlawfully withholding. This event demonstrated how the unfulfilled promises of imperial reform could ignite a sustained and violent struggle for total liberation.
