1794: Spanish forces under Don Francisco de Villa Nueva captured the town and harbor of Gonaïves during an attempt to co-operate with British military operations. However, the Spaniards were soon driven out by a small detachment of rebel negroes, leaving the local French inhabitants to be massacred by the insurgents.
