1794, May 6: (Toussaint Louverture’s Volte-Face): On May 6, 1794, after secret communications with Laveaux, Toussaint Louverture attended early mass at Marmelade alongside the Spanish commandant. Immediately following the service, he unfurled the French Tricolor and led his regiment in a surprise attack that decimated the Spanish garrison. In a swift morning campaign, he restored Limbé, Acul, Dondon, Gros Morne, and Plaisance to French control. While his exact motives were unrecorded, it is believed he opposed the Spanish restoration of slavery and sought a path to leadership he could not achieve under Spain. This decisive sense of timing and secrecy resulted in Toussaint being promised the rank of general by Laveaux.
