1794-Jul.: A considerable number of French enslavers seeking refuge in Fort Dauphin were slaughtered in their homes by the forces of Jean François. This tragedy was blamed on the Spanish commandant, who had issued a misleading proclamation promising safety to any French citizens who delivered themselves to Spanish authority.
