1794-Jan.: Spanish military forces achieved a major strategic victory by successfully occupying the port of Fort Dauphin following the surrender of local French planters. Upon entry, the occupation authorities immediately moved to suppress all symbols of the French Revolution, including the tricolored cockade and republican pamphlets. They implemented strict censorship on printers and prohibited independent political meetings to enforce a counter-revolutionary order. However, the Spanish inherited a population deeply influenced by the spirit of republicanism and determined to resist external control. This attempt to re-impose colonial hierarchy failed to erase the egalitarian aspirations that had already taken root in the diverse social classes of the town.
