1793-Sep.-25: The “Regente” of the Audiencia of Santo Domingo submitted a comprehensive report on the state of commerce and social order in the colony since 1788. The report detailed the devastating impact of the Haitian Revolution on the regional economy and the massive displacement of populations. It also analyzed the breakdown of traditional social hierarchies as free and enslaved people of color increasingly asserted their rights. The Regente emphasized that the old mercantilist systems were no longer sufficient to contain the rapid flow of people and ideas. This document served as a final assessment of the colonial order on Hispaniola before the total transformation of the island.
