1793-late: Toussaint Louverture, Jean-François, and Biassou entered into a strategic alliance with the Spanish crown to fight as “auxiliary” forces against the French Republic. This maneuver allowed black revolutionary leaders to secure military protection and essential supplies while continuing their struggle for autonomy. By agreeing to fight under the Spanish flag, these commanders demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of inter-imperial rivalries. The Spanish hoped to use these seasoned troops to bring the wealthy colony into their own imperial orbit. This cooperation proved that the leaders of the unfree were not merely reactive but were central political actors capable of leveraging global powers for their own ends.
