1793-Jul.-15: The Journal des Révolutions de la partie française de Saint-Domingue, published in Philadelphia, began documenting the experiences of thousands of white refugees fleeing the burning of Cap Français. The journal provided a platform for displaced French colonists to share their accounts of the “horrors” of the black rebellion. It also served as a focal point for political debate within the expatriate community in the United States regarding the future of the colony. The publication highlighted the significant impact of the Haitian Revolution on the social and political life of American port cities. This source documents the internationalization of the conflict through the medium of the refugee press.
