1793-Fall: Enslaved workers in the bakeries of La Guaira began openly discussing the success of the revolution in Saint-Domingue. They predicted that within a year they would be free as the “blacks of Guarico” and spoke of throwing off the Spanish yoke. This surge in political awareness was sparked by the presence of French republican prisoners held in a nearby makeshift prison. Observers noted that once-trusted domestic slaves and free people of color now challenged authorities with egalitarian ideas of liberty. The bakery functioned as an informal space where revolutionary news from the islands inspired local movements for emancipation.
