1793-Aug.: Governor García of Spanish Santo Domingo shipped over 500 republican prisoners, including many people of color, to the port of La Guaira in Caracas. These captives had been taken during military campaigns in Ouanaminthe and Dondon and were described as loyal to the new French Republic. García feared the “rebellious spirits” of these individuals who had experienced four years of liberty in Saint-Domingue. The arrival of these prisoners brought the mainland into direct contact with the revolutionary ideology of the French colony. This forced migration of political prisoners served as a major conduit for the transmission of radical maxims throughout Venezuela.
